Your Teacher

I’m Kendra, a professional cartoonist for the New Yorker Magazine as well as Wired, the Wall Street Journal, Woman’s World, Narrative Magazine, Alpinist, Fantasy and Science Fiction Magazine and many other publications and organizations. In my more personal work, I love taking months-long hikes and bike rides and drawing what I find there and I’m currently working on a graphic novel. I didn’t go to a traditional art school and I couldn’t draw at all in my early 20’s. I’m largely self-taught with great additions from continuing education classes and great teachers, friends and mentors I found along the way. I love teaching adults because I know how frustrating it can be to learn these skills as an adult, when you’re far from your goal, and also how satisfying it is when you reach those artistic goals and then keep going beyond to new ones.

My current studio also doubles as my kitchen table, dining room table, and living room.

The pillars in this studio are the ones I’ve found really work to build a solid artistic practice, and I use them myself to keep growing as an artist. I continue to work on my technical skills, to examine my voice and style, to show up to my art regularly, and I rely on my artistic community for feedback, friendship, inspiration and to not go absolutely crazy-nuts in my head some days.

I currently live and work out of a rig, driving around to beautiful places with my partner. The Kitchen Table Atelier allows me to teach deeply and build ongoing relationships with students while living a foot-loose and travel-filled life. And it proves you don’t need a fancy studio to create your art. A table, some favorite materials, and a lot of time can get you there.
